My Week in Instagrams: February 22, 2013

I can't believe this is the last Friday of February. This year is whipping by. This past week, I've been pretty productive as far as knitting goes. I've eliminated a few skeins, which made me happy. I also made a small dent in a few other skeins, so they're going to be finished up quicker. Anyway, this is what I've been up to this week, according to Instagram.

This is the cowl I mentioned last week. It used almost a whole skein of Wool Ease Thick and Quick, but not enough to call it finished. I'm going to find a project to use all the partial skeins of T&Q that I'm sure I'll have soon enough.
Winston and I were goofing around, and sometimes I pick him up and throw him over my shoulder like a baby. A 55 pound baby. Rick took this photo, and I loved it.
I love white hot chocolates from Tim Hortons, but they're never full to the top. They're kind of frothy, I guess. Still tasty, and I will continue drinking them forever.
I was knitting with The Knit Girllls and Numma Numma. This cowl is another one I finished this week. More about it a little later. I love knitting and watching podcasts. If you haven't watched The Knit Girllls, I strongly suggest it. It's really entertaining.
I sold a pair of tiny flower earrings to someone in Texas. I couldn't find the ones that were actually in the shop, so I had to make them. I have to get more metal earrings made for my upcoming shows.
I dug this skein of Moda Dea Tutu out of my stash. It's been in there for about 6 years, waiting for the perfect project. It's the accent on a little project that I neglected to photograph, because it's not sewn up yet. I'll hopefully have that up some time next week.
All these wonderful vegetables that Rick is washing/peeling became some amazing Moroccan lamb stew. No recipe for this, because he mostly wings it. It was served over Israeli couscous, which was a really good pairing. There is still quite a bit left, I'll probably have that for dinner tonight.
I set myself up to make some more earrings the other day. I finally got around to making a few pairs today. I need need need to make more. I have the craft show next week, and my stock is running really low.
Rick also made a quinoa salad to have with the stew. I could eat this stuff every single day. There's quinoa, tomatoes, cucumber, a red onion, corn and the seasonings. Once again, no recipe unfortunately. I should get him to write things down.

This is most of what I've been knitting this week. First up is a creamy coloured lace neck warmer. It's my usual pattern, and I think it looks awesome. I still have enough yarn left to make something else, I just have to decide what I'll be doing.
This is the same neck warmer I was knitting with The Knit Girllls. I was hoping to finish off all three of the colours, but only managed to get two eliminated. That means I'm at +13 for my stash down so far. Only 63 more skeins to eliminate by the end of the year! I'm sure I can do it. I do have more yarn coming to me though. I'd better get cracking.
This is my new favourite neck warmer. It's almost the same pattern as the other lace neck warmers, but it wraps three times instead of two. I've had a couple people ask for longer ones, so I'm trying out a few to see if they'll actually sell.

Self portrait Monday: February 21, 2011

Today's self-portrait is neither taken by me, nor taken today, but I am using it. I look like garbage today, and feel about the same. I've had an ongoing headache for a few days, and I slept horribly. I also had a pretty ridiculous nightmare which involved getting walked in on while using the bathroom, Sprawl*Mart, running from some terrifying people, breaking into a bathroom, and someone allergic to bee stings. Ridiculous and terrifying. I'm surprised I didn't wake Rick or Winston up.

Yesterday, Rick took a bunch of photos of me "modelling" a few of my knitted things. Most of them made me look completely crazy and unattractive, but Rick managed to get a few to look alright. I make some really gross faces when there are cameras around. I really don't know how to smile properly, as far as I am concerned. But, I really like this one, and this cowl is probably my newest favourite. It has one cable down the front and the rest is seed stitch. I'm really getting the hang of cabling, and I've already made another cowl with three cables on it, and it looks pretty nice, too. I'm going to make more cabled items soon. I love the technique, and it makes everything it's on look so much more luxurious. I'm so glad I learned how to do it, I don't know why I was so scared to learn before.

I tweeted yesterday about making some earrings. One of my followers, Crissi Cochrane, who is an awesome musician, and an awesome crafty person, asked if I could post some photos of them. I just took one of all of them with the built-in camera on my computer (as all of my self portrait photos are) and managed to keep my face out of it. I'm pretty happy. I made 6 pairs out of buttons I found at Value Village, the Salvation Army, and an et Cetera shop. I was looking for nice buttons a while ago, and I was super excited when I found all of these. I am going to keep these ones as my personal stash for now. I don't want to start selling them if they are going to fall apart. I did use really good adhesive, so fingers crossed, they'll all be ok.
It's a holiday here in Canada (maybe just Ontario? I don't know, Family Day is kind of a silly holiday) and there is a TON of snow on the ground that fell yesterday. It's going to be a nice day to relax.

Self portrait Monday: February 14, 2011

Happy Monday everyone!

This past week has been pretty productive. I tidied up a large part of the office, where I keep my yarn. It's no where near being clean, but it's a lot better, and Rick is much happier.

I'd been having some issues with inspiration, and hadn't knit much of anything for a little bit. I knit some baby hats (more on this further down) and then a little while later, I saw something online (I can't remember what it was) that told me to make this neck warmer.

It's knit in Homespun (of course) and it's quite a bit different from what I usually make. The grey is ribbed and the yellow is seed stitch. It's long enough to wrap around twice, and wide enough to be wrapped up and over your head while still covering your neck. I'm working on another one in a different colour already.

I've been saying for ages that I need to post photos of my knitted things online, and I am really hoping I'll actually get around to doing it this week. I just need to bribe Rick into doing it. I'm thinking Pho, all you can eat sushi, or Mongolian Grill will be the way to go. (Are you reading this Rick? Or just skimming?)

Now for the hats.

I got a message on Facebook from a lovely lady named Jordyn whom I haven't talked to in ages. She recently had a baby named Jessiah, and asked me to knit him some hats. I happily obliged.

These are two of the three that I made. The third is all dark blue. I made them on my Knifty Knitter, so I'm really hoping they fit him, because there isn't any smaller I could go.

I am going to see them tomorrow to drop the hats off and catch up.

Self portrait Monday: January 31, 2011

Today is a big day. Well, yesterday more than today, but that's all unimportant.
Yesterday was Rick's birthday. I had the day off work and we spent most of it together. I did also spend quite a bit of time knitting.
I bound off my Boneyard shawl!!! I started it back at the beginning of November, and just finished it yesterday. If I was to dedicate knitting to it and only it, I could probably finish in two or three weeks. I couldn't be happier with this shawl. It's a tiny bit on the itchy side, but I have a feeling it will soften up with wash and wear. It still needs to be blocked, but I wore it out to Rick's birthday dinner last night anyway, and it is amazingly warm.
Forgive the morning face, and bed head, I was too excited to post about this to bother about any of that. I want to get a shawl pin so I can wear it a few different ways rather than just wrapped this way.

I've finished a few other items in the past week. The biggest one was three very similar cowls. They all use the same yarns, just in different accent colours.

It's just a simple seed stitch with two yarns held together. I think I will be making many more of these. they're the perfect length to double around your neck, as I did with the blue one. I really hope I can find more of the dark grey yarn I used because it's easily the best yarn I've ever bought in the mill end bags. I will check the Zellers I bought it from to see if they happen to have any left. I got it a long time ago, but I know they had a couple bags when I went there about a month ago.

Overall, life is pretty good. I am likely going to start posting many of my finished objects on Facebook so I can hopefully sell a few to local people and not have to worry about shipping and such.

A few more recently knitted items!

 As promised, here are a few other items I've made recently.
I'm a little new with the photo editing, so the colours are a teensy bit off. They are much closer than the original photo, though! I must be on the right track. The butter-yellow scarf was made with leftover Homespun from a baby blanket. The next one in, the purple is doubled over the "clothes line" so it's actually twice as long. The blue/grey is also doubled over. This one is SUPER thick. Next time I combine these yarns, I'll have to use slightly larger needles. The last scarf is really long. Something like 8 feet, I think? It's made from some fuzzy yarn I got in a mill ends bag. It has a lot of natural fibres in it. It sheds quite a bit, which isn't too fun.
All of these are basic garter stitch. It's awesome using slightly textured yarns in scarves; they look way more interesting for very little work!
The second photo is another hat and a cowl. The hat is Homespun, once again, held with a plan yarn in a similar colour. That is one of the best combinations for hats in my opinion.
The cowl is made from some more remnant yarn I bought. I have quite a bit of it left, even after making three scarves and two cowls from it. It's the first cowl I made in that stitch pattern. Since then, I have changed it around a bit so that the eyelets are slanted at a farther angle. It looks awesome, and makes everything I use it for more fun to knit. I am working on another neck warmer in the same pattern for an order from a friend of mine right now.

Overall, I am pretty satisfied with how much I've made in the past while. I am going to continue knitting winter accessories for a little while, and then start working on my personal projects. I have two shawls on the go, as well as my giant baby blanket that I put away at the beginning of the warm weather last year.

Some of my finished items

Last week, I brought my items into the Made In Windsor holiday store. I went in today to help Christine out with some of the inventory stuff, and I also did some photographing of a few of the items.
I started with the pottery, then jewelry and some clothing. Then I moved on to some of my stuff.
This first photo is three of the neck warmers I've made in the past few months. All super simple, holding two strands together.  These ones are super simple, and super quick to whip up. They're great for people who are out and active in the cold weather, and who don't want to mess around with long scarves getting in the way.

The second is just a scarf and a hat. I wish I could find more yarn like the one I used for the scarf for as good of a price as I found that stuff. It's Bernat Roving, but I got it in a bag of mill ends for ridiculously cheap. It's a really simple horizontal rib pattern. I've done a few variations on it, as well.
The hat is just Lion Homespun held with a similar shade of some worsted weight yarn. I have about 10 hats or so at the store, and I just finished another one for a friend of a friend. She placed the order through him when I had my art show at Phog.

More brown cowls and other news

Have you ever bought those bags of "mill end" yarn? It's often a bag of the same type, sometimes different, but usually under $5.

This is some of my favourite yarn. It's cheap, and if you look hard enough, you can find some really great yarns. I picked up a bag of what I am assuming is Bernat Roving in the Cork colourway. It's super soft, and really nice to work with. It does pill somewhat, but nothing a lint shaver or roller couldn't fix. I've made a cowl out of it already, and started on a second. I'm using the same pattern for both.

In other news, I am going to soon be selling my knitted items at rEvolution gallery+studio in Kingsville. I'm super excited to get stock made up to bring in there. I'm hoping to have everything made and brought in by the 20th; 2 weeks from now. Ten bows and ten phone cases is what I am shooting for, and possibly some of the dishcloths that I already have made.

I don't think I mentioned this before, but Made In Windsor is closing the store front at the end of the month. Super saddening, but they are going to stay open in a different way. There is going to be a weekly market downtown every Sunday at a cool new place opening up. It's going to be in the parking lot, and there will be around 30 vendors. Once it starts cooling down some, I am going to hopefully do it a couple times. Until then, I will probably be volunteering/working there. This weekend, I will be working at the Made In Windsor booth at Windsor Pride. I have quite a few things that will hopefully be sold there, and I'm excited. Some of my friends will be partying at Pride, and I can't wait to hang out with them.

All in all, life is good. No complaints here!

Pretty pink iPhone case

I just finished sewing up an iPhone case a few minutes ago. I love knitting these, the sewing up, not so much. It looks a little wonky in the picture, so I stretched and straightened after the photo, then put my iPhone in. Then realized I wouldn't be able to take a photo that way and laughed at myself. The button is a really nice simple white shank button with a metal shank and little metal bit showing on the front. It looks really nice with the pink yarn. I do have to find more inexpensive shank-style buttons because my small stash is starting to run out. Perhaps I could use beads instead... No lack of supply there!
I have enough of this yarn to make a hair bow, and possibly half of another bow after the first.
I am going to be bringing this case along with my first batch of hair bows into Made In Windsor either today or sometime next week.
I have also completed another neck warmer with the off-white Thick and Quick I bought last week. That is in my "art show" pile. None of those things have their ends woven in. I am not sure if I will regret this later on down the line or not. Haha.
The airy dusty pink triangle scarf is still a work in progress. I have started feeling a bit burnt out on the fine yarn, fine needles, and endless yards of garter stitch.
OH NO!!! Ok, so, I knit while I am writing these posts, and an entire row of the triangle scarf has to be pulled out and re-knit. There are several odd mistakes in ONE ROW! This is awful and awesome at once. First, I found the mistakes right away, second, it's all in one place more or less. But, this yarn is a pain in my butt!!!
Hopefully this works out, I need to focus!
Edited to add only seconds later; I DROPPED A STITCH 10 ROWS BACK! I AM SO AFRAID RIGHT NOW!

Scarves, Bows, Cables and Business Cards

Michael's had a sale on a few types of yarn that I use, so I bought some the other day. A skein of Homespun and some Vanna's Choice to match, as well as a skein of Thick and Quick. I also got a pair of short needles (7 inch, if I remember correctly).
I started a neck warmer with the Thick and Quick. It's in seed stitch, and a little larger than I usually make them. I like the way it looks so far. Just a few more rows and I'll have it finished. I also started on a kerchief/scarf sort of thing with some of the yarn that was given to me by my friend's mom. It's a light, airy, almost lacy triangle of goodness. It's a dusty pink, very fine yarn, and I am pretty sure it is 100% acrylic. I'm not sure, and I don't want to burn any of it to check. The only downside to this yarn is that is tangles really easily. I have to stop quite often to get enough yarn out to knit the rest of the row and untangle it.
I have also ween working on the hair bows quite a bit. I got some good reviews from some friends, so I will keep plugging away at them.

I want to learn how to do cables. Yes, I know, ten or so years of knitting, and I've never done them. I've watched videos, and read tutorials, but I just can't quite grasp it. I think I need a one on one teacher.

I need to get more business cards made. I am very close to not having any of the ones I currently use, which are horribly outdated anyway. I have no idea where to order them from. I keep being told Vista Print, but I've had bad experiences with them, as have some of my friends. Any suggestions?

A New Cowl, and New Yarn

I meant to post this yesterday, I really did. But my body had other suggestions. I was incredibly sick, and had no motivation to do anything but snuggle under blankets and sleep. And also whine to whoever was listening about how terrible I felt. I am feeling marginally better today. Enough to write a blog post and possibly even get changed out of my pyjamas before noon.

I bought a cone of yarn the other day at Value Village. It's a wonderful bright blue, textured, and quite thin. I plan on using it held double or triple. Which is what I am doing in my newest project.
Two strands of white worsted weight, and the fun blue yarn, on 8mm needles for a cowl. Fifty six stitches, k2p2 rib. The little red piece of yarn is my marker for the beginning of the round. I started this two days ago, and it's going quite well.
I have decided to continue knitting winter items throughout the warmer months, or for as long as I can stand them, to have stock ready for next year. I will, of course, knit other things, but I think one scarf every other week will be a good start for the winter craft shows, and Made In Windsor stock, next year. Sure, I'll probably look crazy knitting a scarf in July, but it will reduce my work load next year. And hopefully cause less stress, as well.
I now plan on laying down for a while. No need to over exert myself!

Lazyness, Finished projects, Mission 101 and Other Things

I have a confession to make. It is hard to say, but it is very, very true. I don't promise to work on it, it is just the way I am... I have been very lazy lately: not doing dishes, not doing laundry, staying in my pyjamas all day, and not updating the blog regularly. Among other things. I know Rick would have some things to say about my laziness, but this is my blog, and he has no say here.
I am very sorry, dear readers, for leaving you update-less for so long. As for sitting in my pyjamas and being lazy? If I don't have to work or leave the house in general, I'm staying comfy in my jammies, and usually knitting, all day.

I have been pretty productive with my knitting as of late. I finished a couple of cowls over the past week. There is a picture of those later on in the post.
I also think I finished a few dishcloths, but I honestly can't remember how many. I have a stack of nearly finished cloths sitting on my end table, waiting to have their ends woven in and to be sent off to Made In Windsor to find a new home. Part of the reason for this is that I am trying to use up ALL of my cotton as one of the goals on my Mission 101. I am also trying to use half of my silly novelty yarn. I have a lot of fun fur, eyelash and other "fluffy" yarns that I bought a while ago, and I want to get rid of it. I would like to have that room freed up in my storage area for other, more useful yarns. I know some yarn bombs will be fluffy, and tacky and plastic, but those ones are the most fun.
If you haven't seen my 101 list, please check it out! I have been making slow progress on some of the goals. I haven't started most of them, but I will get through this. I'm having fun so far.

These are my two newest neck warmers. The one on the right is my usual Thick and Quick yarn cowl. It was made in a 1x1 rib, and is 54 stitches. The colour is a little bit off, but not by much. It's a bit brighter in person. I made it a little bit longer than I usually make this type of scarf so as to use up the rest of the skein, and not leave a tiny ball of yarn, with no where to go. It can be worn with the top folded down, as shown, or with the bottom folded up. To visualize that one, either stand on your head, or turn your computer over.
No, really! Please don't! I don't want you to hurt yourself. Ah, ok, good, now, back to yarn.
The one on the left is really neat. I made it with two strands of black sport weight (I think that's what it was. A little thinner than regular worsted) and one strand of BRIGHT! blue knitting machine yarn. I have a giant cone of it, that I got back at the beginning of December. Most of the colours are kind of "blah" but this blue is fantastic. Click the picture to see it a bit larger. As soon as it fell out of the bag, I knew I had to make something with it. This warmer is in seed stitch. That is something I usually stay away from, but the yarns needed a pattern a little different than ribbing to make the pop a little bit.
I just noticed an other warmer I made recently that I forgot to include in the photograph. It is similar to the butter yellow one I made a couple weeks back, but slightly smaller
I have started on yet an other cowl/neck warmer. This one is made from yarn I got back in 2006 from my then-boyfriend's mother, after she finished knitting an afghan. I am very close to the bind off for this one. I will probably have it done before I go to bed tonight, and blog about it when I think about it.

I am a terrible knit-blogger in this sense. So many blogs I follow have in progress pictures of all their wonderful knit items. I, on the other hand, take a less beautiful approach. I photograph an item, if I remember, once I have finished it. Rarely at any other time. I think the reason for this is that they are knitting huge! intricate! items! from patterns! And my items are usually made up as they are being knit: "Oh, I might run out of yarn a little soon, let's k2tog in this round" or "Wait, I thought this was supposed to be ribbing? Well, it looks cool in seed stitch, too, I guess." I would take more photographs of my items in progress if I was not so absorbed in the actual knitting itself.
I am going to cast on my blanket after the cowl is done. I would like to have at least half of it done before it gets too warm in the house to knit it. And then next winter, I would finish it, ideally. This will be photographed in the next few days, as long as everything works out right.

In other news, I recently purchased an iPhone. I usually get myself a birthday gift, and this year, a new phone was it! My contract with my previous carrier was very close to being up, and I knew I needed to change. I have downloaded a few apps, but I've yet to look for any that are knitting related. Is this a pointless search? Or am I missing out on some wonderful way to facilitate my knitting endeavors? I prefer free apps, but if it is essential, I don't have any issues with shelling out a dollar or two (and 99 cents, of course!)

Three more finished items

I finished the Hazelnut neck warmer I mentioned in my last post. It's the same "pattern" as the black one, K2P2 rib, and just shy of a full skein of Thick and Quick. I need to find something to do with all the partial skeins of this type of yarn. I have at least 5 balls the size of clementines, or larger, just waiting to be knit into something

The second item is the Homespun cowl. It's knit out of about a third of a skein of Buttercup. This is a little different from the T&Q neck warmer. It's knit on the same needles, but it is just straight stockinette, instead of the ribbing. I also reduced a few stitches along the length of it in order to give it a bit more shape. I started on a similar cowl in Deco (a nice off white) before leaving for work this morning. I need to find a looser bind-off method. I have a hard time with this sometimes.

Any suggestions for a looser bind-off?

The third item is the dishcloth. That was the last of that skein of blue/yellow/white. I am slowly but surely moving through my stash of cotton. I have enough for probably 50 more cloths, if not, many more than that.

Two Finished Objects, One Picture.

As part of my 101 project, I have set myself a few knitting related goals. The first is to knit 101 scarves and neck warmers. I also have yarn bombing related goals, and I would like to use up all of my cotton yarn.
I finished a rainbow dishcloth last night, and added it to the pile of other cloths I have floating around the house. I still haven't gotten bored of knitting the same cloth over and over again, but I am considering mixing things up a bit. I will probably start making some other basic cloths in the near future, depending on how all of my other knitting goes.
I have sold a couple of cloths at Made In Windsor, which is great.

The other awesome knitted item in the photo is a neck warmer. It's made from Lion Wool Ease Thick and Quick in Black. I think 8mm needles, 56 stitches. It's just a K2P2 rib, but I think it makes this yarn look fantastic.
I've started an other neck warmer, this one in Hazelnut. Everything else is the same.

I will keep updating with pictures as often as possible. I know I am a horrible photographer, but I am hoping to improve, at least slightly, with time.

I got paid from Made In Windsor the other day. This payment included most of the days leading up til Christmas, and I made quite a few sales. So many, in fact, that this payment was larger than all the others combined! If you purchased something from me, I really hope you, or the recipient, are enjoying it!

Long Time, No Update

I promise I didn't forget about you! I've been working my back side off 90% of the time, and I just haven't had the time to knit.
The red cowl is still on the needles. I'm not sure how long Sonia wants it, so I'm waiting on her input.
Other than that, I have started a tumblr. It is sort of a catch all for anything that I find interesting. Leave a message here if you follow me on there!

Craft Night at Phog!

This past Thursday was Craft Night. But it wasn't just any craft night, it was probably the best we've had so far.
Several new faces showed up, as well as a couple that hadn't been in a while, not to mention most of the regulars. I taught Richard how to knit, and once he got going, he did well.
I started on the red tube scarf for Sonia. Still working on it for short bursts between work. (I got a second job working from home. I'm working for Windsor Insider, doing something I have a great feeling about.) Figures this is the only photo of me knitting that night, and I'm texting. Yes, I did shave my head, no my hair is not all falling out, it's the lighting and the angle that makes me look bald.
After craft night, we went outside and played with Sam's banners (I hate the word bunting) up against a wall, and she took some fantastic pictures.

Yet an other cowl

I promise I will start knitting more interesting things soon!
I started knitting an other cowl, this one in some left over Wool Ease that I've had laying around for quite some time. I'm not sure what the colour, but it is a nice sky blue. It's slightly smaller than the rest of the cowls I've been making, only because I don't want to run out of yarn before it's long enough.

I am going to start using my Knifty Knitters more often. If anyone has any patterns or ideas for them, please share!

I am cheating today!

For those who celebrate, Happy Easter!
I didn't start anything today, I admit it. I did finish casting off the other cowl I started the other day, though. It's done using the same "pattern" as the other cowl, same yarn, different colorway. I used the Gypsy colour. Which is amazing. I'm not a blue lover, but it has every other colour in it, plus sparkle. It's pretty sweet.

I'm running out of ideas on what to knit next. I have TONS of leftover bits or all sorts of random yarn that I want to use up, but I never know what to make out of them. If you happen to have any suggestions of what I should knit next, please let me know! Keep in mind that I can't use copyrighted patterns, because I usually sell what I make.

The Siren Cowl

I told you I would update! I come with much information about the Siren cowl. And a cell phone picture!
I started knitting this Sunday, because Sonia told me she wanted a gold cowl. I didn't have any gold yarn, but I thought this might be a reasonable substitute. There is a strand of sparkly running through this yarn. If she doesn't like it, I will probably just bring it to one of my future craft shows.
It's knit in 5x5 rib on 8mm circs. If i remember correctly, it's 60 stitches around. It may be 50 though. I'm not a big fan of patterns, I tend to make things up as I go along, so if I ever want to make this again, I will have to go through the cowl itself and get all the details out.
In any case, here it is! Pardon the terrible picture quality, and the fact that it's a mirror picture, I still haven't found my camera in any of the many boxes I have unpacked.

ALSO! I actually took the time to weave in the ends before I photographed this! I think that's a first!

It's Still Sunday!

I didn't forget about you today, I promise! I've just been busy.
Today was my first day back to work since moving on my own, and I decided to stay out late last night anyway.
In the in between time, I managed to start a new cowl. This one in Moda Dea "Cache" in the Siren colorway. It's being done on... Circular needles? (I can't recall the size at the moment, but I will post a more accurate description later this week.)
I'm actually very close to finishing it, more will come soon!

Two "tomorrows" later!

Wow! I completely forgot to blog yesterday! I worked most of the day and then came home and slept for a while. I needed to catch up!
I do have a picture of the cowl I made while it was still being knit.
The colour is pretty spot on (Wool Ease T&Q in Taupe). It's quite a bit longer than what the picture shows, because I continued knitting for a little while after the picture was taken. The pattern is a modified version of a few patterns I found online. It needs a little more tweaking until I will be SUPER happy with it, but this cowl, in my opinion, is awesome!
